Personal Experience with the Surgery - Part 1

Kamusta!

I am Allen, 21, male from Manila.

I created this blog to provide useful information to orthognathic surgery patients in the Philippines. I also wish to make my blog a place to discuss concerns and issues related to the procedure.

In view of the extreme lack of available information (even in the internet) regarding orthognathic surgery in the Philippines, I shall be your personal guide / researcher who would tell you everything you may want to know about this still-unpopular surgical procedure.

Before anything else, I want you to click the following links. They provide helpful info:

So here's the part 1 of my personal experience with the surgery:

I underwent orthognathic surgery few months ago. Based on the cephalometric evaluation before the surgery, I had class III malocclusion (underbite - my lower teeth were protruding). I also had assymetric front jaw. So the surgeon told me my lower jaw needed 10-millimeter push-back and a few millimeters genioplasty (removal of some bone on my front lower jaw to correct its contour).

Most of the time, a comprehensive orthodontic treatment is needed before the surgery to prepare the teeth for its new occlusion or bite after the surgery. In other cases, it's usually the braces that keep the upper and lower jaws immobilized after the surgery. Yes, the braces stays on before, during and after the surgery.

Unluckily I was not properly informed about that. So I proceeded with the surgery without enough knowledge on what will happen after the operation in the OR. So when I woke up in my room at the hospital, I realized they put something they called "archbar" on my lower and upper teeth to immobilize my jaws. It was awful.

I could see the wires of that archbar going through my gums. I never expected it's going to be like that. The only thing I had in my mind at that time was I need to calm down and to talk to my surgeon. When my surgeon visited me for the check-up, he assured me that it's fine. I could not do anything because it's already inside my mouth, and my only concern then was to get well and recover fast from my surgery.

When I got back home, I immediately checked youtube and from there, I saw that none of the patients wore that archbar. It was really upsetting. I mean I thought I was exposed to some kind of primitive method in this surgery. Until now, I can't find any patient who wore that archbar.

It took 2 months before that god-damn archbar was removed. I endured 8 weeks of total mouth closure with only Ensure and other liquids to drink. No food. No anything. I was really frustrated.

(to be continued)

Feel free to ask questions.

MrPhilippines here. :)

Problematic Teen said...

Hey man! From my anonymous name, yes I am a teen that has problems with his appearance, my case is my lower jaw is undeveloped therefore my jawline looks weak and sometimes I look like I don't have one at all. It started in 9th Grade where I saw a side view photo of myself, then dun na din nag start yung pagiging self-deprecating ko.

I've researched about people who proceded with the surgery similar to mine and so far they were amazing results! My worries lang is the experiences of the surgeons here in our country. Not to be judgemental or whatever, medyo skeptical lang ako if I'll compare them to surgeons in other countries like Korea and Thailand. Naging conclusion ko dun is naging undecisive ako whether saan mas maganda gawin yung surgery.

I'm also curious if the surgery is in-line to cosmetics or is it for medical reasons, pero no matter what I'll still pursue this haha. Gusto ko din gawin to as early as possible before I age into pure adulthood, which brings me to the question, may limit ba tong classes of surgeries na to? It may sound stupid but I am really curious to know haha.

I would love a reply, good or bad haha. That's all for now, and thanks for making this blog to share some important experiences that a lot of us have been dying to know. You're a wonderful being and may God Bless you po!

Hey guys! health insurance companies in USA, Canada and UK usually cover this type of procedure for free or for a less price...so here’s my story....I underwent double jaw surgery to correct my underbite in DC last July 19, 2018 (babalu no more!) The cost was about $80,000 but eveything was covered by the insurance ...I only paid $20 as copay for the surgery...wala akong numbness or pain when I woke up from the surgery (as in wala) I can feel my entire face, cheeks, lips lahat sa face ko (ang galing ng surgeon dito guys) ...Jaw surgery is actually common here in the USA and most insurance cover this type of procedure as this procedure is not purely cosmetic, kinoconsider din kasi nila ang long term negative effects pag meron kang underbite or overbite...so mas gugustuhin ng insurance companies na mag undergo na lang ng surgery kaysa mas dadami pa ang complications later on sa clients nila... bago yung surgery ay kailangan munang magbraces para maging perfect na yung teeth bago nila i-cut yung jaw during the surgery...1 year akong nagbrace before surgery...during that time, mas naging prominent yung underbite ko dahil pinag-straighten nila yung teeth...once na align na at mukha nang straight yung ngipin then yun na inoperahan na ako....I’m 1 month post op at meron pa rin slight swelling sa nose at upper lip ( sabi nang surgeon it will take 3-6 months or even until a year para mawala yung swelling)...basta worth it talaga itong surgery!

surfing thru the web and found this blog,,

just wanna share my thoughts abt having the same condition. I'm just a teen, specifically still in junior high, that has the same problems as these. Hindi naman dahil sa iba pero sakin lang. Sometimes, I see myself away from others just because I'm kind of insecure of my looks. I've seen people doing the surgery with so many amazing results. Which sometimes leads me to have dreamed of this surgery.

My case is probably not that worst, it's just really my lower teeth and chin sticking out and it annoys me. I hope this can be corrected by just braces.

Maybe this blog is not active na, jusko 2020 na haha

Hi sa inyo, im 20 years old and I have the same 'mahaba baba' issues. Nadepress ako ng sobra at nakailan na ring suicide attempts dahil hindi ko na kaya yung pambubully sakin all through out high school hanngang senior high.

Your surgeon should be imprisoned for life for making your jaw even worse. As soon as i saw your surgeon suggest a 'pushback' to your mandible (lower jaw) because of your underbite i know for a fact that man steals other people's money for a living. I know this is circa 2008 BUT TO EVERYONE READING THIS, THE REASON WHY YOU OR OTHER PEOPLE DEVELOP AN UNDERBITE IS BECAUSE YOU OR THOSE PEOPLE LACK THE PROPER DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAXILLA (UPPER JAW). Bilang pinanganak na filipino, nasa genes naman natin na magkaroon ng mas maliit na maxilla compared sa other races eh. Di natin makukuha yung same jaw level natin compared sa other races BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN'T BE IMPROVED. The surgeon should have advised to advance the maxilla forward and if needed tailored to your cosmetic needs. But no, that terrorist wanted to ruin your jaw further more by pushing the mandible so far back behind your maxilla. PICTURE THIS, YOU ALREADY HAVE AN UNDERDEVELOPED MAXILLA AND NOW, THE SURGEON PUSHED BACK YOUR MANDIBLE TO BE AS SAME LEVEL AS YOUR UNDERDEVELOPED MAXILLA. It's a recipe for disaster and future jaw problems (tmj/tmd/sleep apnea) awaits you. Baka nga, as of this time of writing, the original poster already show signs of this problem. And maybe have more bad symptoms of a weak jaw such as advanced aging, narrow face, brittle teeth and gums, small palate, eye problems (due to lack of eye support), neck problems, posture and many others.

WHATEVER YOU DO, KUNG WALA NAMANG PROBLEM SA JAW, TEETH, GUMS OR SA BUONG MOUTH. WAG NA WAG KAYONG MAGPAPACONSULT SA ISANG FILIPINO DOCTOR OR AVAIL SERVICES (SUCH AS BRACES) TO THEM. ABOUT 80% OF THESE DOCTORS (WHO OPERATE THEIR OWN CLINICS) PRACTICE BARBARIC METHODS (SUCH AS TEETH EXTRACTIONS) TO MILLIONS OF FILIPINO KIDS AND ADULTS

would rather fly out the country and spend millions to consult a foreign dentist/ortho that promotes expansion/advancement of the jaw rather than stay with this barbaric filipino dentist.

Hindi ako self-hating filipino, but it's clear to me that none of our present and new dentist/ortho knows how to expand/advance the jaw to make our jaw healthy. Alam naman natin na maliit talaga yung facial bones/skull natin in general compared to the other races because we're asian with diets that dominantly eat soft foods but it doesn't mean that we can'timprove our facial bones to prevent facial problems in the future.

Always remember, JAW>>>WHITE TEETH or teeth in general.

Embarking on my journey with Dr. Kiran Naik at The Beauty Doctors in Mumbai, I was initially apprehensive about the plastic surgery costs in Mumbai. However, my concerns were quickly alleviated when the team provided a transparent breakdown of expenses, ensuring there were no surprises. The affordability of the vampire facial cost in Mumbai, especially at The Beauty Doctors, was the first pleasant revelation. It allowed me to indulge in this cutting-edge procedure, which revitalised my skin with astonishing results.
As for my rhinoplasty, the surgery cost was an investment in my self-esteem. Dr. Naik's mastery was evident in the delicate reshaping of my nose, balancing my facial features with finesse. The personalised care and attention to detail made my experience not just a medical procedure, but a transformative journey towards self-improvement."
